San Juan Capistrano is named after the mission founded there in 1776. The city is home to California’s oldest residential neighborhood, Los Rios, located just across the train tracks from Mission San Juan Capistrano.
Downtown San Juan Capistrano is home to an abundance of locally-owned restaurants and shops, as well as some larger chain restaurants and stores. It is a popular spot for tourists due to its location on a train line, which services both Los Angeles and San Diego, allowing tourists to visit the city, and locals to visit other popular locations in Southern California.
San Juan Capistrano has four elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools. San Juan Capistrano is also home to six private schools, including one located on the grounds of the Mission.
